The farming skill is strange: every Pal with farming only has one level in it, so you don’t get much difference in raw skill. But the drops? Those vary like crazy. Because you can only place so many bases and ranches, choosing the right Pal matters more than you think. Honestly, I’ve gone back and forth on this list more times than I’ve reorganized my storage chests. Let me share my personal ranking, from the fluffy but replaceable to the molten little powerhouse I now never run a base without.

8. Lamball — The Fluffy Starter Pal

Lamball is the tutorial’s way of teaching you that ranches work, and it’s a dependable little floof. This small, fluffy Pal produces wool, which becomes essential for so many recipes: the glider, cloth, and plenty of other early and mid-game gear. What makes Lamball special is not its uniqueness, but its abundance. Because Lamball is everywhere and easy to catch, you can quickly grab one with a helpful work speed trait. When I first started out, I stuffed a few of these round clouds into a ranch and never worried about wool again. It’s not flashy, but it gets the job done.

7. Chikipi — The Egg Machine

Chikipi is basically a large, chubby chicken with a serious work ethic, and it’s the only Pal that drops eggs at the ranch. Sure, you can find eggs by knocking out certain Pals or stumbling across them in the wild, but having a Chikipi farm them is way more efficient. Eggs are used in multiple cooking recipes and reduce hunger by a significant amount. Honestly, a feed bag full of eggs has saved my hide more times than I can count. It may not be the best choice for filling the feed box, but for keeping my own belly full while I’m out exploring, Chikipi earns a spot.

6. Mau — The Passive Income Cat

Mau is an Egyptian-inspired cat that quietly drops coins while assigned to the ranch. One Mau won’t fill your bank, but multiple Maus will give you a nice passive income. That means fewer trips hunting for rubies and less wasted Pal spheres on creatures you only plan to sell. You can also use those coins at the merchant, basically turning Mau’s ranch time into whatever you need from the shop. It won’t make you rich overnight, but let’s be real, every coin helps when you’re broke and eyeing a nice saddle.

5. Mozzarina — The Unsettling Milk Cow

Mozzarina is a very round cow with, I’ll be honest, an unsettling face. But don’t let that put you off: it’s the only Pal that drops milk at the ranch. Like eggs, milk is used in various recipes, though it reduces less hunger when consumed raw or cooked alone. Its real value comes from recipes that raise hunger greatly, especially cake. And if you plan on breeding Pals, you’ll need cake. Milk also helps make pancakes and mushroom stew, which feed your Pals efficiently and keep their sanity up. I keep one Mozzarina around even if it gives me the side-eye from the corner of the ranch.

4. Woolipop — The Sanity-Saving Candy Sheep

Woolipop is essentially a sheep made of candy, and its Paldeck entry claims it’s 2,000 times sweeter than sugar, which honestly makes no sense but I love it. It produces cotton candy at the ranch. Cotton candy only gives five nutrition, but it also gives five sanity, which is much higher than most raw or even cooked food. That makes Woolipop perfect for producing cotton candy in bulk. I store it in the feeder so my worker Pals don’t lose too much sanity during long crafting sessions. If your base workers start moping around, this is your sweet-tooth answer.

3. Caprity — The Berry Bush Goat

Caprity is a goat with a berry bush growing right on its back, which makes perfect sense because it produces raw berries at the ranch. Berries are the most common food item in the game, giving 15 nutrition raw and 21 nutrition cooked, and they cook fast. They don’t provide any sanity, but they’re the easiest thing to toss into the feed box or your feed bag while you’re hunting or planting other food. Because Caprity drops so many berries, you really only need one on the ranch. It’s simple, reliable, and keeps everyone fed without much effort.

2. Beegarde — The Honey Drone

Beegarde is one of Elizabee’s worker drones, vaguely bee-shaped and absolutely precious. It’s one of the few ways to get honey, which it drops in the ranch. Honey can be eaten raw for ten nutrition and three sanity, and Beegarde tends to produce more than you’ll ever need. Honey is also an ingredient in cake, so if you plan on breeding Pals, you’ll want at least one Beegarde. Compared to cotton candy, honey is better for placing in the feed box. I only prioritize Woolipop over Beegarde if I’ve got one with a work speed buff. Otherwise, Beegarde’s sweet golden drops win.

1. Flambelle — The Flame Organ Fountain

Flambelle is a small Pal that looks like a melting candle made of magma, and it is the only Pal that produces flame organs at the ranch. Flame organs are used in fire arrows, saddles, furnaces, armor, and a whole lot more. This is hands down the easiest and most efficient way to get flame organs. Otherwise, you’d have to catch or hunt fire-type Pals, which often hide away in high-level areas and aren’t exactly common. If you can, try to have multiple Flambelle on your ranches. I didn’t realize how much I needed flame organs until Flambelle started pumping them out for me, and now I never want to go back.
